The main source of Wettin wealth was silver, discovered in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) in 1168. We will visit the Saxon center of the silver mining industry.

Freiberg (Free Mountain) was one of the richest towns in Europe in the 12th century. We will walk through the romantic cobblestone streets of the old town and visit the impressive late-Gothic cathedral with the so called golden portal, beautifully carved double pulpits, and two organs made in 1711 by Gottfried Silbermann. An organ recital in the cathedral enables us to enjoy the outstanding musical quality of Silbermann's work.

In the village of Seiffen, tin miners begun carving wooden toys as early as the 17th century. Nutcrackers, wooden trees, angels, miners and pyramids have been the specialty of Seiffen for the past 100 years. In one of the workshops we can see how the toys are produced which bring childhood back for any visitor old enough to remember the first half of the 20th century.
