Schloss Pillnitz is a lovely palace in the outskirts of Dresden. For each Dresden traveler it’s visit is a “must”.

August the Strong gave this romantic retreat as a present to one of his royal mistresses, the Countess Cosel. Later Pillnitz was used as the summer residence of the royal family. The grounds include well-kept gardens and two smaller palaces in faux-Chinese style.

On our tour through the gardens, we will see all the essential features of a truly magnificent baroque garden. There are fountains, parterres, and lesser gardens disposed within hedges that flank a graceful central axis of chestnut trees. These hidden gardens were the setting for ingenious theatrical entr'actes and entertaining court games. Of course, we will tell you in detail about the court amusements that took place here. As the botanical highlight in the garden, we will show you an enormous camellia, which is the oldest in Europe. The palace is now a furniture and craft museum, which we will not visit on our tour. Pillnitz can be reached from Dresden by paddle steamer as well as by road.
